What Is Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome, also known as facet joint syndrome, is a common cause of chronic back or neck pain that originates from the small joints located between each vertebra in your spine, known as facet joints.

Anatomy of the Facet Joints

Facet joints are paired joints in the back of the spine that enable controlled movement like bending, twisting, and extending. Lined with cartilage and a lubricating capsule, they glide smoothly. When inflamed, irritated, or degenerated, these joints can cause localized or referred pain.

What Causes Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome happens when spinal facet joints become inflamed or degenerated due to aging, injury, or overuse. Key causes include spinal osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, repetitive strain (like bending or lifting), and poor posture. Other triggers are trauma, spinal misalignment (subluxation), obesity, inactivity, and even prior spinal surgery, all of which can increase stress and inflammation in the facet joints.

Symptoms of Facet Syndrome

Bulging disc symptoms vary based on location and nerve pressure. Some people have no symptoms, but if nerves are compressed, signs like the following may occur:

  • Bending, lifting, or twisting may trigger or intensify discomfort.
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion when bending or twisting the spine.
  • Pain may spread to buttocks, thighs (sciatica), shoulders, or arms.
  • Affected nerves can cause pins-and-needles sensations in legs, feet, hands, or arms.
  • Nerve pressure may lead to reduced strength in nearby muscles.
  • Ongoing aching or sharp pain in the lower back, upper back, or neck, often worse with activity.
