What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is pain along the sciatic nerve, the body’s longest nerve, running from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. It’s often caused by compression or irritation from a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis. This pressure can lead to pain, numbness, or tingling radiating down one or both legs.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is commonly caused by inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. The most frequent source is a damaged or herniated spinal disc, the gel-like cushions between vertebrae that absorb shock and protect spinal nerves. When these discs are stressed by injury, poor posture, or heavy lifting, they can bulge or rupture, pressing on nearby nerve roots. If the sciatic nerve is affected, it can lead to lower back pain, shooting pain down the leg, and numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot, making sciatica a common result of disc-related issues.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica symptoms can range from mild to severe but typically follow a distinct pattern, starting in the lower back and radiating through the buttocks, down the legs, and sometimes into the feet. Common signs include sharp, electric shock-like pain, burning sensations, tingling or pins-and-needles, numbness, muscle weakness, and occasional muscle spasms. These symptoms usually affect one side of the body, following the path of the sciatic nerve.

When & Why Symptoms Flare Up?

  • Prolonged sitting or standing
  • Sudden movements like sneezing, coughing, or laughing
  • Bending backward or twisting the spine

The Risk of Leaving It Untreated

If left unaddressed, the condition can worsen. The herniated disc or misalignment that’s compressing the nerve may deteriorate further, leading to increased pain, reduced mobility, and long-term nerve damage.
