What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis occurs when spaces in the spine narrow, putting pressure on the spinal nerves. This can lead to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the neck, back, or limbs. It often develops gradually from age-related wear, especially in those with osteoarthritis, but can also result from herniated discs, bone overgrowth, or rare causes like tumors. Lumbar stenosis (lower back) is most common, while cervical stenosis affects the neck. Early recognition and knowing the type of stenosis are key to choosing the right treatment and improving mobility.

What are The Causes?

Spinal stenosis is most often caused by age-related spinal degeneration, especially in people over 50. As discs dry out and shrink, the spinal canal narrows, often worsened by osteoarthritis and bone spurs. Other causes include herniated discs, thickened ligaments, spinal injuries, tumors, or being born with a narrow spinal canal. In some cases, scar tissue from spinal surgery may also contribute. These issues can lead to nerve compression, causing pain, numbness, or other neurological symptoms.
