What Are Herniated Discs?

A herniated disc happens when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through its outer layer, often pressing on nerves and causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, neck, arms, or legs. One common symptom is sciatica, pain that travels from the lower back down the hips, buttocks, and legs. It’s usually caused by a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis compressing the sciatic nerve.

What Are the Causes of a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc can result from disc degeneration, repetitive strain, or sudden injury. As discs lose hydration with age, they become more prone to tearing. Frequent bending, twisting, or lifting, especially with poor posture, weakens the disc’s outer layer. Improper lifting, trauma (like falls or car accidents), and excess weight add stress to the spine. A sedentary lifestyle and prolonged sitting also increase pressure on discs, while genetics may predispose some people to early disc degeneration or spinal weakness.

What Are the Symptoms of a Herniated Disc?

Herniated disc symptoms vary by disc location and nerve involvement. Some people have no symptoms, while others may experience pain, numbness, or limited mobility.

  • Bending, lifting, or twisting may trigger or intensify discomfort.
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion when bending or twisting the spine.
  • Pain may spread to buttocks, thighs (sciatica), shoulders, or arms.
  • Affected nerves can cause pins-and-needles sensations in legs, feet, hands, or arms.
  • Nerve pressure may lead to reduced strength in nearby muscles.
  • Ongoing aching or sharp pain in the lower back, upper back, or neck, often worse with activity.
